Hail Adventurers!

As citizens of the world of Terra, your character has almost certainly acquired some common understanding of how the world works. They likely know the names of the months of the year, for example, or about how much a pint of ale costs at most taverns. This post is part of an ongoing project to supplement the common knowledge available on the website and in the Rulebook.

COMMON GOODS PRICE GUIDE

Prices vary around the world as supply and demand shifts. Still, in times of peace, trade between nations as well as the influence of the Merchant Consortium keeps the value of many goods mostly stable. A savvy merchant can turn a great profit by exploiting market fluctuations and regional price differences.

In general, you can expect to pay about five copper for any of these goods:

  • One pound of cotton
  • Two sacks of grain
  • One and one-half pounds of meat
  • One pound of dairy product
  • One peck of fruit or vegetables
  • A single threadbare garment, such as a used pair of boots
  • One common flower for herbalism
  • One common scrollcrafting ink
  • Two explosive traps
  • A simple lock
  • A small raw gem
  • The pattern to a novice-level scroll or a novice-level Herbalism recipe

These goods cost about a silver, give or take a few coppers:

  • One plank of wood
  • One block of stone
  • One bar of iron
  • One bolt of cloth
  • One square of leather
  • One barrel of fish
  • One pound of prepared foodstuffs
  • One-eighth of an ounce of spices
  • An inexpensive outfit
  • A wool blanket
  • A cheap meal at a tavern or canteen
  • One phial of Rosewater
  • One uncommon flower
  • One Aetherbloom ink
  • One ounce of common metal, ritual-grade
  • A small cut gem, or a large raw gem

Five silver will usually buy you these products or services:

  • Three bottles of ink
  • Two barrels of beer or wine, or two handles of liquor
  • Three planks of fine veneer wood
  • Two pounds of glass
  • Two bars of refined metal, such as steel or aluminum
  • One bottle of fine wine
  • Half a wagon of coal
  • Clothing of higher quality, such as formal wear or a fashionable dress
  • A beast of burden, such as a plowman's ox or a dairy cow
  • A voyage by sea; for example, to the Obsidian Isles from Runa
  • A one-slot Redarian
  • A small crafted gem, or a large cut gem
  • A Journeyman-level scroll pattern or recipe
  • One Aetherbloom flower
  • One Benediction Disc
  • A couple of good locks

These goods cost more than one gold, but usually less than five:

  • A fine warhorse
  • A small boat equipped for sailing in shallow waters, or between islands in a chain
  • A new wagon, suitable for travelling long distances across land
  • A three-slot Redarian
  • A rare flower
  • A large sculpted gem
  • An excellent lock

These things cost at least ten gold:

  • The rights to a small house or fief of land on Runa soil, including the Obsidian Isles
  • Extremely rare components for rites and rituals
  • A ship capable of travelling on the open seas
